Artists Statement
It is time to write a new statement about my views on painting,
my relationship to a pursuit that I have loved and wrestled with
for decades. My intentions haven’t changed; I still want to
get into the spirit, the essence of a thing, whether it be a place,
or a person, or animal or a situation. Age and changes, though,
have made me aware that time is precious and not endless; that the
process of living is the substance of life itself; that my gratitude
for the gift of life will be reflected in my living it as fully
and generously as I can.
I want my paintings to reflect this attitude, and I want them to
be as much about the process of painting as the subject matter.
Some are involved with my grandchildren who I adore. Some are involved
with horses which I have always loved, and which represent to me
a beautiful combination of freedom, elegance, strength and beauty.
One is the view of the St. Croix River from my bedroom, and one
is a view of the Pacific Ocean from a lovely place I visited in
Northern California. There isn’t any place or person that I
love that I wouldn’t like to paint.
