Step 1: Attach Window Mat to Backing Board

Tools and Supplies: linen tape and burnishing bone, cutting tool

Cut two or three small pieces of tape (more if picture is larger). Attach the top edge of the window mat to the backing board with linen tape. Put water on the back of the tape to activate the adhesive. Burnish the tape down with the burnishing bone. Make sure edges are flush when closed, then open again.

Step 2: Center and Mark Backing Board

Tools and Supplies: weight and pencil

Center art on backing board and weight down. Gently lift the artwork and mark the board 1/8" under the edge of the art where the hinges are needed. Lift the weight and remove the art.

Step 3: Attach Hinge

Tools and Supplies: Tweezers, burnishing bone, acid-free tape

Fold tape with the sticky side out to form a "V". Position the tape’s folded edge on the pencil mark and burnish the bottom of the hinges to backing board with burnishing bone.

EDITOR’S NOTE The linen tape adhesive is activated with water. Filomoplast is self adhesive.

Step 4: Attach Hinge to Art

Tools and Supplies: Barrier paper and burnishing bone

Put a barrier paper over the art and burnish down the hinge to secure it to the art.

When done the hinge should look like this.

EDITOR’S NOTE In some cases the art will need to be attached on all sides to keep it from touching the glazing material. Always keep the hinges folded edge toward the edge of the art.
